Kigali Genocide Memorial
About This Museum
Here on this hillside in Gisozi, the earth itself holds a profound and painful memory. The Kigali Genocide Memorial isn't just a building; it's the final resting place for over 250,000 of our lost brothers and sisters. You walk through the exhibits and their stories wrap around you—the photographs, the voices, the personal belongings that were left behind. It’s a place of immense sorrow, yes, but also of a quiet, resilient hope that such a thing must never happen again.
Collection Highlights
The children's room is perhaps the most heart-wrenching, with simple panels detailing favorite foods and last words. Another powerful section traces the colonial roots of the ethnic divisions, explaining how this hatred was carefully, poisonously cultivated over decades.
Visitor Information
Come with time to reflect. The gardens are a peaceful place to sit and process everything you've seen. It's located on KG 14 Ave, and as is custom here, you'll be asked to dress respectfully.
Architecture & Building
The main building is modern and low-slung, built from local stone—it feels grounded, like it belongs to this hill. Its design is intentionally subdued, allowing the stories within to take center stage.
