Kaymakli Underground City
About This Museum
Can you imagine an entire city, complete with stables, churches, and homes for 3,500 people, all hidden completely underground? That's Kaymakli, a labyrinthine world carved directly into the soft volcanic rock of Cappadocia. It’s not just a single tunnel but a sprawling, multi-level complex that descends deep into the earth. Wandering through its narrow passages and low-ceilinged rooms feels like stepping into a real-life adventure novel. You can't help but feel a sense of awe for the ancient communities that lived and thrived here.
Collection Highlights
You'll see the massive circular stones they used to roll shut and barricade the entrances from invaders. Don't miss the intricate ventilation shafts that provided fresh air to even the deepest levels and the fascinating wine presses carved right into the floor.
Visitor Information
A heads-up for anyone planning a visit—watch your head! The doorways and tunnels are famously low, so you'll be doing a lot of polite ducking. It can get quite crowded in the main corridors, so try to go early in the day if you can.
Architecture & Building
The entire city is 'subterranean troglodyte,' which basically means it's an incredible network of hand-carved caves, tunnels, and rooms all dug out of the tuff stone.
