Jelgava Fire Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away on Dobeles street, this place is a total hidden gem that tells the story of firefighting in Latvia from the 19th century to the Soviet era. You can practically feel the history as you walk past the old leather hoses and hand-pumped engines they used back in the day. The centerpiece is this massive, beautifully restored 1926 Mercedes fire truck that looks like it just rolled out of a workshop. It's not a huge, overwhelming museum, which makes it feel really personal, like you're getting a private look into a brave part of the city's past.
Collection Highlights
The star is definitely the gleaming 1926 Mercedes fire engine, but don't miss the collection of historic helmets and the old alarm system. Seeing the evolution from simple hand carts to more complex motorized trucks is fascinating.
Visitor Information
It's right at Dobeles iela 16, and from what I gathered, it's one of those places where it's best to check ahead or call to confirm they're open. Definitely worth a quick stop if you're in Jelgava.
Architecture & Building
Housed in what looks like a classic, unassuming Latvian building that might have once been a real firehouse itself, adding to the authentic vibe.
