Jektefartsmuseet

About This Museum

You probably don't think of a fish oil tank as the heart of a nation, but that's the kind of perspective-shifting truth you find here. Tucked away in Bodø, this museum tells the incredible story of the 'Jekt'—the humble, single-masted cargo ships that carried dried fish south and brought back vital grain, essentially building coastal Norway with their trade routes. It’s not just about boats; it’s about the families, the communities, and the sheer grit it took to survive these voyages. The atmosphere is surprisingly intimate and personal, making centuries-old history feel immediate and deeply human.

Collection Highlights

The star is undoubtedly a full-scale, fully-rigged Jekt ship named 'Anna Karoline,' which you can walk right up to and touch. You'll also find beautifully preserved figureheads staring out from the past, intricate scale models that show the Jekt's evolution, and personal items like sea chests and tools that belonged to the sailors themselves.

Visitor Information

It's easy to find on Kvernhusveien, right by the water in Bodø. The staff are wonderfully passionate and full of stories—don't be shy about asking questions. Check their website for seasonal opening times before you go.

Architecture & Building

The building itself is a modern, angular structure of dark wood and glass that somehow fits perfectly with its historic subject matter, almost like a contemporary interpretation of a boathouse nestled against the Norwegian coast.
