About This Museum

What strikes you first is the impossible, electric blue of it all. This isn't just a ruin; it's a monumental reconstruction of the legendary Ishtar Gate, a towering portal of cobalt-glazed brick that once heralded the entrance to ancient Babylon. Processions of magnificent bas-relief animals—snarling lions, powerful bulls, and the serpent-dragon Mushhushshu—march in silent grandeur across its facade. Standing before it, you are transported to the heart of Nebuchadnezzar II's empire, feeling the awe he intended for all who approached.

Collection Highlights

The gate itself is the main event, a symphony of lapis lazuli and gold hues composed from thousands of molded bricks. Look closer and you'll find alternating rows of over one hundred majestic Mušḫuššu dragons and ferocious bulls, symbols of the gods Marduk and Adad respectively.

Visitor Information

You'll find it standing proudly at the site of ancient Babylon itself, so wear comfortable shoes as you'll be exploring dusty paths under the Iraqi sun. It’s best visited in the cooler morning hours when the light makes that famous blue glaze truly sing.

Architecture & Building

A massive, arched city gate built from mud brick and entirely faced in a vibrant blue faience, decorated with glazed brick reliefs of sacred animals.
