Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology
About This Museum
You'd never guess that the very ground beneath Idaho holds one of the world's most diverse collections of minerals, but this fantastic little museum proves it. Tucked away next to the Old Penitentiary, it feels like a hidden gem itself, packed with stories written in stone. I was completely captivated by the massive, glittering quartz crystals and the fascinating history of the state's mining booms and busts. Itβs a surprisingly intimate and powerful look at how geology shaped an entire region.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is a stunning display of fluorescent minerals that glow under black lights; you can also get up close to a real mine tunnel and see gigantic amethyst geodes and native gold from Idaho's most famous districts.
