High Desert Museum

About This Museum

Just a stone's throw south of Bend on the dusty stretch of Highway 97, you'll find a place that truly captures the spirit of this high desert country. It’s not your typical quiet museum; it’s alive with the chatter of kids and the scurry of river otters in their habitat. They’ve done a wonderful job bringing the stories of both the land and its people to life, from Native American cultures to the hardy settlers who followed. It feels less like looking at exhibits and more like stepping right into the sagebrush and ponderosa pine.

Collection Highlights

Don't miss the indoor-outdoor otter exhibit where you can watch them swim and play, or the authentic sawmill replica that rumbles to life. The Spirit of the West exhibit is a favorite, connecting you with cowboys, miners, and the deep history of local tribes through incredible artifacts.

Visitor Information

It's open daily, but check their website for hours as they change with the seasons. There's a decent-sized parking lot, and you'll want to carve out a good two or three hours to see everything without rushing.

Architecture & Building

The building itself has a low-profile, rustic feel with lots of wood and stone that seems to grow right out of the landscape, blending seamlessly with its desert surroundings.
