Gorj County Museum Alexander Ștefulescu
About This Museum
If you want to understand the soul of Gorj, you start here, in the old prefecture building on Geneva Street. The museum, named for its first director Alexander Ștefulescu, has been gathering our stories since 1893. It’s where you can trace a line from ancient Dacian tools straight through to the folk costumes your own great-grandmother might have worn. You don't just see history in glass cases here; you feel the weight of it in the quiet, polished halls.
Collection Highlights
Everyone makes a beeline for the Brâncuși Hall, of course, with its original plaster casts and photographs of the man himself. But don't miss the 'Gorj Village' ethnographic section—it's a whole world of carved wooden gates, looms, and woolen coats that still seem to carry the scent of woodsmoke. Downstairs, you'll find Roman coins from Săcelu and pottery that reminds you this has always been a land of craftspeople.
Visitor Information
It's right there in the center of Târgu Jiu, easy to find and a perfect retreat from the afternoon sun. Pop in any day except Monday; it's one of those places where you can wander at your own pace without feeling rushed.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a stately, late-19th century building that once served as the county prefecture, it has that dignified, official air about it, with high ceilings and creaking wooden floors that have seen generations pass through.
