Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière
About This Museum
You'd never guess that beneath the modern concrete of this museum lies the actual earth where Roman senators from Lugdunum once walked. It's built right into the hillside, cradling the ancient theatre and odeon it was created to protect. Inside, you'll find a world pieced together from broken pottery, delicate glassware, and coins lost between cobblestones centuries ago. The star of the show is undoubtedly the magnificent Claudian Table, a bronze plaque that captures the very words of Emperor Claudius himself. It’s not just a display of artifacts; it feels like listening to the city's oldest whispers.
Collection Highlights
The speech Emperor Claudius gave to the Roman Senate, inscribed on a massive bronze plaque known as the Claudian Table; an incredibly detailed miniature model of the entire Roman city; and rooms filled with stunning mosaics that still retain their vibrant colors.
