Fundación Guayasamin
About This Museum
Perched high in the Bellavista neighborhood, this place feels like a secret hideaway with some of the most breathtaking views over Quito. It was once the home and studio of Oswaldo Guayasamín, Ecuador's most famous painter, and his intense, emotional spirit is absolutely palpable in every room. You can almost see him working in the light-filled studio, surrounded by his collection of pre-Columbian artifacts and colonial art. Wandering through, you're surrounded by his powerful, often heart-wrenching paintings that seem to stare right into your soul.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Man), his monumental posthumous masterpiece next door dedicated to human suffering and resilience in Latin America. His 'La Edad de la Ira' (The Age of Wrath) series is also unforgettable, with its anguished, twisted figures that are impossible to look away from.
Visitor Information
Taxis are your best bet to get up the steep hill, and it's closed on Mondays so plan around that. The altitude is no joke here, so take it slow as you explore the different levels of the property.
Architecture & Building
The building is a striking, modern concrete structure that Guayasamín designed himself, built right into the hillside with massive windows and open spaces that frame the city below like a living painting.
