DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun
About This Museum
Tucked away in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun feels less like a traditional museum and more like a pilgrimage into the artist's soul. Founded by Ted DeGrazia himself, this 10-acre property is where he lived, worked, and built his adobe gallery by hand. You don't just see his vibrant paintings of Southwestern life and Native American children; you experience them in the very space they were created. The light here is incredible, bouncing off the terracotta floors and illuminating canvases filled with sun-bleached colors and a profound, simple spirit.
Collection Highlights
The 'Los Niños' collection is unforgettable, with its iconic images of wide-eyed children that became DeGrazia's signature. Don't miss the stunning 'Mission in the Sun' mural painted on the interior dome or his powerful 'Papago Legend' series that captures the mythology of the local Tohono O'odham people.
Visitor Information
It's free to wander the grounds and gallery, which feels like a gift. Just head to 6300 N Swan Road in Tucson; it’s an easy drive from downtown. The desert garden outside is as much a part of the visit as the art inside.
Architecture & Building
The buildings are a whimsical cluster of rustic, hand-formed adobe structures that look like they grew straight out of the desert earth, complete with rough-hewn timber ceilings and quirky, personal touches everywhere.
