Daguoye Columnar Basalt
About This Museum
It's not every day you find a geological wonder hiding just below the surface of a fishing village. The Daguoye Columnar Basalt is an incredible wall of towering, five-sided stone pillars that were accidentally unearthed by the Japanese military in the 1940s. These massive, dark grey columns stack together like some colossal pipe organ, creating a stark, dramatic silhouette against the bright Penghu sky. It feels less like a traditional museum and more like stumbling upon a secret the earth has been keeping.
Collection Highlights
The main event is the basalt wall itself—a natural sculpture of incredible symmetry and scale. You'll also find smaller fragments and interpretive signs that explain the volcanic forces which created this landscape millions of years ago.
Visitor Information
Just head to Xiyu Township in Penghu; it's famously photogenic, so go early to avoid the crowds. There's no ticket booth or formal gates, it's an open-air site you can explore freely.

There is no building—the 'museum' is the magnificent, excavated cliff face itself, set within a rugged coastal landscape.
