Château de Compiègne
About This Museum
Just a short train ride north of Paris, the Château de Compiègne rises from the edge of a vast forest, a royal residence that feels almost like a secret compared to Versailles. It was here that kings pursued the hunt and Napoleon Bonaparte later orchestrated his own lavish restoration of the palace. Stepping inside, you're immediately transported by the breathtaking sequence of Second Empire apartments, their silk hangings and gilded furniture looking as if the court has just stepped out for a moment. The château also cradles two fascinating museums under its grand roof: one dedicated to the very cars and carriages that rolled up its drive, and another exploring the rich history of French sculpture.
Collection Highlights
You can't miss Napoleon III's opulent private apartments or the Musée du Second Empire, which feels like a glittering party frozen in time. The Musée de la Voiture showcases everything from ornate 18th-century carriages to some of the earliest horseless carriages, a real treat for anyone fascinated by how we get around.
