Chihuly Garden and Glass
About This Museum
It’s a strange and wonderful truth that the glass sculptures of Dale Chihuly are so organic and vibrant, they often feel more alive than the plants they're displayed alongside. Nestled in the shadow of the Seattle Center's Space Needle, the exhibition is a riot of color and form that defies the fragility of its medium. You wander from dark, cavernous rooms where neon chandeliers drip from the ceiling like extraterrestrial jellyfish into a sun-drenched garden where giant, fiery blooms nestle among real foliage. The entire place feels like a journey into the imagination of a mad genius who sees the world through a kaleidoscope.
Collection Highlights
The centerpiece is undoubtedly the massive, sunshine-yellow 'Glasshouse' installation, a 100-foot-long suspended sculpture that fills the central conservatory with light. Don't miss the Persian Ceiling, where you can walk under a sea of thousands of intricately patterned glass forms, or the mesmerizing 'Mille Fiori' (a thousand flowers), a sprawling, fantastical gardenscape built entirely from glass.
Visitor Information
It's right at the base of the Space Needle, so you can't miss it. If you can, try to book a ticket for later in the afternoon; seeing the outdoor garden sculptures transition from natural light to being artfully lit against the night sky is pure magic.
Architecture & Building
The main building is all sharp, modern angles and vast sheets of glass, designed as a sleek series of galleries that feel almost like minimalist black boxes—a perfect neutral canvas for Chihuly's explosive art. This contrasts dramatically with the centerpiece Glasshouse, a elegant steel-and-glass conservatory structure reminiscent of a classic botanical garden pavilion.
