Chicory Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away in the riverside village of Kolkja, this little museum tells the surprisingly rich story of a root that shaped our local community. It all centers on chicory, which was grown and roasted right here for generations to make a beloved coffee substitute. You'll find everything from old farming tools and vintage blue tins to the stories of the families who worked the fields. It's a wonderfully specific slice of Estonian rural life that you won't find anywhere else.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the collection is the original, beautifully preserved roasting oven. Don't miss the wall of colorful historic packaging and advertisements, and you can even handle the gnarly, dried chicory roots themselves.
Visitor Information
Pop in anytime during the summer months; it's small enough that a half-hour is plenty, but you'll leave with a real sense of place. The caretaker is usually about and full of personal anecdotes if you're curious.
Architecture & Building
It's housed in a charming, traditional wooden building painted a crisp white, looking every bit the part of a classic Estonian village house.
