Casa de Juan Montalvo
About This Museum
I had no idea that Juan Montalvo, one of Ecuador's most famous writers, was actually buried right in his own living room. Stepping into his Ambato home feels less like visiting a museum and more like walking into a beautifully preserved 19th-century time capsule. You can almost hear the scratch of his pen in the quiet study, surrounded by his original furniture and personal effects. The air is thick with the presence of a man who lived and breathed literature and political debate.
Collection Highlights
His iconic round spectacles rest on a desk, next to manuscripts written in his distinct hand. One of the most moving exhibits is his elaborate coffin, a stark reminder of his final wish to remain in the home he loved.
Visitor Information
It's tucked away in central Ambato (look for the address Q95C+87J), and it's one of those intimate, powerful spots you can properly appreciate in an hour or so.
Architecture & Building
The building is a classic, elegant example of a Spanish-style colonial house, with a central courtyard, white-washed walls, and heavy wooden doors that creak with history.
