Bequia Heritage Museum
About This Museum
You'd never guess that this tiny, unassuming building on the hillside holds the entire soul of Bequia. It feels less like a formal museum and more like stepping into your great-grandmother's attic, if she had saved every fascinating artifact from generations of whalers, boat-builders, and farmers. I was completely captivated by the stories tucked into every corner, from intricate model boats to old wedding dresses. It’s a deeply personal and heartfelt tribute to island life, all lovingly curated by a local historian.
Collection Highlights
Look for the incredibly detailed whaling dories and harpoons that tell the story of the island's most famous trade. Don't miss the collection of vintage photographs showing Port Elizabeth when it was just a dusty track, or the traditional 'Donkey Engine' used for processing sugar cane.
Visitor Information
It's perched just above Port Elizabeth in Hamilton, so it's an easy walk from the ferry. Definitely call ahead to confirm it's open, as hours can be flexible—it’s that kind of wonderfully informal place.
Architecture & Building
It's housed in a charming, rustic wooden cottage with a corrugated roof and a welcoming porch, painted in bright tropical colors that make it feel more like a local home than an institution.
