Belmont Mill & Artists Studios
About This Museum
Just a stone's throw from the grand gates of Birr Castle, down the Birr road, you'll find the old Belmont Mill. It's a place that hums with two kinds of history: the industrial past of its working mill and the creative present of the artists who've made it their home. The great water wheel still stands as a silent sentinel to a bygone era, while the air inside is now thick with the scent of paint and clay instead of grain dust. It’s a rare spot where you can feel the old Offaly and the new chatting to each other.
Collection Highlights
You can watch potters at their wheels and painters at their easels in their open studios, often creating pieces inspired by the local landscape. Don't miss climbing up to see the massive, restored iron water wheel—it's a true feat of 19th-century engineering.
Visitor Information
Pop in during the afternoons; it's when you're most likely to catch the artists at work. There's no stiff formality here, just a warm welcome and a chance for a proper chat.
