Aviation Museum
About This Museum
What truly sets this museum apart is its location—it's nestled right on the edge of the active Ilopango Airport, so you can watch modern planes come and go while exploring aviation history. The heart of the collection is a remarkable fleet of vintage aircraft, many of which saw action during El Salvador's civil war, preserved in the open air where they feel almost within reach. Inside the main hangar, you'll find a more intimate collection of uniforms, photographs, and flight manuals that tell the personal stories behind the machines. It’s a place that feels less like a sterile exhibit and more like an active, breathing archive.
Collection Highlights
Look for the iconic Douglas A-37 Dragonfly and the hefty C-47 transport plane parked on the tarmac; inside, don't miss the detailed dioramas of historic air battles and the lovingly restored cockpit section you can actually sit in.
Visitor Information
It's a fantastic spot for an afternoon; wear comfortable shoes for walking on the pavement between planes, and bring a hat as much of the collection is outdoors. The staff are often retired pilots and mechanics with incredible stories if you have a moment to chat.
Architecture & Building
The main building is a no-frills, functional aircraft hangar—all corrugated metal and vast open space—which perfectly suits its purpose and makes you feel like you've stepped onto an airfield from a bygone era.
