Argentomagus Archeological Museum
About This Museum
Just outside Saint-Marcel, the Argentomagus museum sits on the very ground where a bustling Gallo-Roman town once thrived. It's a place that feels deeply connected to the past, where you're walking in the footsteps of the Bituriges Cubi tribe. The collection is wonderfully tangible, from delicate glassware that still holds a ghostly sheen to the worn-down grooves of ancient millstones. You get a real sense of the daily lives lived here two thousand years ago, far beyond just dates and battles.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the stunning bronze statues pulled from a local riverbed—a Minerva and an Apollo, both miraculously preserved. The sprawling necropolis display is equally compelling, with its poignant grave goods laid out just as they were found.
Visitor Information
It's easy to find in Les Mersans, and there's plenty of parking. Give yourself a good couple of hours; you'll want to wander the open-air ruins outside after you've seen the galleries.
