Archaeological Museum / The Treasure of Eauze
About This Museum
Tucked away in the heart of Gascony's sun-drenched countryside, the Archaeological Museum in Eauze is a small but spectacular window into ancient history. Its star attraction is, without a doubt, the legendary Treasure of Eauze, a breathtaking hoard of Roman coins and jewelry that was unearthed by pure chance in 1985. Walking through its galleries feels like stepping back two millennia, connecting you directly to the lives of the Romans who once inhabited this region. It’s an intimate and surprisingly personal museum experience.
Collection Highlights
The entire museum revolves around the stunning Treasure of Eauze—over 28,000 coins and dozens of exquisite pieces of gold and precious stone jewelry, all carefully hidden by a Roman banker or merchant around 261 AD. You'll also find fascinating remnants from the ancient Roman city of Elusa that once stood here.
Visitor Information
You'll find it right on the main square, Place de la République, in central Eauze. While it's compact enough to enjoy in an hour or so, give yourself time to marvel at the intricate details of the treasure—it's truly world-class.
