Alabama State Capitol
About This Museum
If these old walls on Goat Hill could talk, they'd tell you this is where the Confederacy was born back in 1861. But the story doesn't end there; it's also where the Selma to Montgomery marches culminated a century later, making it a powerful place to ponder the full, complicated sweep of Southern history. You can almost feel the weight of it all standing in the old House of Representatives chamber or beneath that magnificent rotunda. It’s more than a monument; it’s a central character in Alabama's long and ongoing story.
Collection Highlights
Look for the beautiful French-made chandelier hanging in the rotunda and the historic clock above the Senate staircase, both original to the building. The most compelling exhibits, however, are often found in the rooms themselves—like the restored 1861 House Chamber where delegates voted to form the Confederacy.
Visitor Information
Your best bet is to just show up and join one of their guided tours—they're free and full of stories you'd probably miss on your own. Afterwards, pop into the gift shop downstairs for a thoughtful souvenir before taking a moment on the grand front steps.
Architecture & Building
It's a stately Greek Revival building made of brick and stucco, painted a brilliant white, with a commanding columned portico and that iconic cast-iron dome you can see for miles.
